ITAREMA – In December 2009, consultants of the Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentável (IABS), an institute for development of sustainability in Brasil, initiated the project activities of PET – Preservation, Education and Work, developed in Itarema (CE), district of Almofala. The project is a result of the partnership between USAID, Motorola, Rogério Monteiro Foundation, Itarema City Hall and IABS.
The PET project aims to collect and recycle plastic bottles with community participation, for the preservation of the environment and the promotion of food security for the population in disadvantaged areas.
After operating for three months (reconstruction and installation of equipment), the PET Project, in Itarema (CE), presented its first results.
In just ten days of processing the recycled materials (from January 20-30, 2010), 72 bales were compacted totalling 3,103 pounds with an overall value of 650 dollars.
This money will be reinvested in the project. The PET project will benefit approximately 2,200 families or 11,000 people in Itarema.
